Supportive Care for Vaginal Birth

Normal vaginal delivery is the birth of a baby through the vagina without the need for a caesarean operation. The progress of labour can vary from woman to woman, and careful monitoring helps the maternity team assess the wellbeing of both mother and baby.

Antenatal care plays an important role in preparing for childbirth. During pregnancy, the mother's health, the baby's growth and other relevant factors are monitored so that the delivery plan can be discussed according to the individual pregnancy.

During labour, the healthcare team monitors the progress of labour and the condition of the mother and baby. If medical circumstances change, the delivery plan may also need to be modified to maintain safety.

Maternity care may include
Regular antenatal assessment
Monitoring of maternal and fetal wellbeing
Assessment of labour progression
Individualised birth planning
Support during different stages of labour
Post-delivery maternal and newborn care

LUCS / LSCS — Caesarean Section

Caesarean delivery performed when a vaginal birth is not advisable or when clinical circumstances make surgical delivery the appropriate option.

Caesarean Delivery

A lower uterine caesarean section, commonly called LSCS or LUCS, is a surgical procedure used to deliver a baby through an incision in the mother's abdomen and uterus.

A caesarean section may be planned before labour or may become necessary during labour depending on the condition of the mother, the baby or the progress of labour. The decision is based on the clinical circumstances and the assessment of the maternity team.

Before the procedure, the healthcare team discusses the indication, anaesthesia, surgical process and expected recovery. After delivery, appropriate monitoring and post-operative support are provided to the mother.

Caesarean care may include
Assessment of maternal and fetal wellbeing
Planned or clinically indicated caesarean delivery
Pre-operative evaluation and preparation
Appropriate anaesthesia and surgical care
Maternal monitoring after delivery
Post-operative recovery guidance

Minimally Invasive Uterine Surgery

A vaginal hysterectomy is a surgical procedure in which the uterus is removed through an incision made inside the vagina. It may be considered for selected benign gynaecological conditions when the procedure is clinically appropriate.

Depending on the patient's symptoms, medical history, examination findings and uterine characteristics, the gynaecologist determines whether vaginal hysterectomy is a suitable surgical approach.

The procedure does not require an abdominal incision. However, suitability varies between patients, and a detailed pre-operative assessment is essential before deciding on the surgical route.

Vaginal hysterectomy care may include
Detailed gynaecological evaluation
Assessment of uterine and pelvic conditions
Review of relevant imaging and investigations
Vaginal surgical approach when appropriate
Pre-operative counselling and preparation
Post-operative monitoring and recovery support

Abdominal Hysterectomy

Total abdominal hysterectomy is a surgical procedure in which the uterus and cervix are removed through an incision in the abdomen. It may be considered for selected conditions such as symptomatic fibroids, certain uterine disorders or other situations where removal of the uterus is clinically indicated.

The decision to perform a hysterectomy depends on the patient's diagnosis, symptoms, age, reproductive plans, previous treatments and overall health. Different surgical approaches may be appropriate for different patients.

Before surgery, the gynaecologist discusses the reason for the procedure, the expected surgical approach, potential alternatives and recovery process.

Hysterectomy care may include
Evaluation of abnormal uterine conditions
Assessment of fibroids and related symptoms
Review of imaging and diagnostic reports
Individualised surgical planning
Pre-operative medical assessment
Post-operative recovery and follow-up

Ovarian Cyst Treatment

Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled or solid structures that can develop in or on the ovary. Many ovarian cysts are benign and may disappear without treatment, while others may require monitoring, medication or surgical evaluation.

An ovarian cystectomy is a surgical procedure performed to remove a cyst while attempting to preserve the healthy part of the ovary. The surgical approach may be laparoscopic or open depending on the size and characteristics of the cyst, symptoms and other clinical factors.

Before deciding on surgery, the gynaecologist considers the patient's age, symptoms, imaging findings and reproductive considerations where relevant. The treatment plan is individualised for each patient.

Ovarian cyst care may include
Evaluation of ovarian cysts
Ultrasound and appropriate diagnostic assessment
Assessment of cyst size and characteristics
Observation for selected cysts
Laparoscopic cystectomy when appropriate
Follow-up and monitoring after treatment
